Sperry High School to host "CRASHs COURT" to Raise Awareness of Dangers of Drinking and Driving

   Tulsa County District Court

Judge Cantrell Calls CRASHs Court to Order at Sperry High School

Prevention can never start too early!  CRASHs Court will convene at Sperry High School Auditorium.  High school students will be in attendance when Judge Daman Cantrell calls CRASHs Court to order on Wednesday, February 8, 2017 at 9:00 a.m.  Sperry High School Auditorium is located at 400 W. Main Street, Sperry, Oklahoma  74073.

More Oklahoma youth are killed in automobile crashes than by any other single cause.  This fact makes it essential for youth to be educated, about not only drinking and driving, but also about using seat belts regularly and not riding with anyone who has been drinking.  In 2011 CRASHs Court evaluation sampled freshman and found that over 24% of respondent’s reported having ridden with a friend or peer who had been drinking within the previous two (2) hours.  More astonishing, the same respondents reported 33% had ridden with a parent or other adult who had been drinking or using within the previous two (2) hours.

CRASHs Court demonstrates the harsh reality and consequences of impaired driving and alcohol use by persons under 21.  Real defendants are sentenced in real court by a real judge.  This illustration of the legal consequence of breaking the law by drinking and driving captures the attention of the young students watching the court proceedings.  Early intervention is key for the prevention of impaired driving and to save lives.
