Sperry Color Guard Takes Honors...Again

Sperry High School Color Guard attended the Oklahoma State Fair Parade in Oklahoma City recently and brought home more honors.  The team of eight girls showed their skill as they placed first in the 3A color guard competition.  This is the third time that the Pirates have placed in this annual competition.

“The competition is stiff and the band did a great job,” said Sperry High School Band Director Makayla West. “Everyone did wonderfully despite the crazy heat. I’m very proud of these ladies.”

Sperry High School junior Emily Narlock has been a Color Guard member for three years. She pointed out that the team performs well at competitions and credits her coaches for giving team members incentive to compete at a high level.  “We tend to do well under pressure,” Emily said.  “We don’t want to let any of the coaches down.”

The band performed music from the animated film “Cars.”

Color Guard members are senior Josie Mullin and juniors Ashley Sutherland, Kyla Walters, Heidi Heitkamp, Emily Narlock, Cheyanne Driskill, Alexis Candy and Ranye Blue. Jodi Heitkamp is Color Guard Coach.

Emily noted that being and performing in Color Guard is a good way to deal with the pressures of school.  “It’s fun. It’s a great stress reliever. If I’m having a bad day I’ll go to practice and get rid of my pent-up anger, get it all out.”
