Lady Pirate Cross Country Team Places 7th at State Competition

Sperry High School's cross country team may be one of the best kept secrets in Pirate athletics.

The secret is now out. The Lady Pirates finished seventh at last week's Class 3A State Championships in Edmond.

Individually, sophomore Laklee Akin finished 19th out of 168 runners on the 3,200-meter course. Freshman Lilly Travis came in 31st overall.

“We've got the hardest working, funniest, most focused and smartest group of girls in the state," said coach Kevin Brown.  “I'm so happy for them and our community. We've shown everyone who we are."

The Lady Pirates advanced to state after a fourth-place finish at the Regional meet. This season the team boasted 11 top-20 finishes and six top-10 placings.

In addition, Sperry's girls received a Distinguished Academic Achievement award for their school grades.

Other Lady Pirate team members are sophomores Claudia Dick, Lindsey Holbrook, Kaylee Moore, Emily Smith and Elin Williams.
