Pirate Baseball Finishes Season at Regionals

The Sperry High School baseball team ended its season on the doorstep of the Class 3A State Tournament last week, falling to Adair 14-3 in the Regional finals at Adair.

The Pirates, who finished the season with a 21-13 record advanced to regionals after sweeping Kiefer 16-14 and 10-1 in the District Tournament.  Sperry High School Head Coach Denton Wolf said, “I was happy with the way we progressed this year. I thought the kids worked very hard, and by the end of the year we were a much improved baseball team. I really appreciated the effort and attitude that they brought to the field every day.”

SHS had to come through the losers bracket to advance to the Regional finals after losing 11-1 to Eufaula. Facing elimination, the Pirates stayed with consecutive wins. The team run-ruled Roland 13-3 before getting revenge on Eufaula, eliminating the Ironheads, 13-8.

Those wins allowed the Pirates to move into the Regional final against Adair (28-8), and the Warriors punched their ticket to State with the win over Sperry.  Coach Wolf said, “I was proud of the way we played in the playoffs. We had a scrappy win over Kiefer in the first Bi-District game, and our players showed a lot of heart in the way they advanced to Regional finals after dropping the first game to Eufaula.”
