Pirate Track Team Competes at State Meet

The Pirate track teams did not come home empty-handed from the Class 3A State Track meet early in May at Western Heights High School in Oklahoma City.

Junior Lexi Winton blew past most of the competition to take home the second-place silver medal in the 100-meter hurdles. Her time of 16 second flat helped the Lady Pirates finish 15th in the team standings. Junior Lakelee Akin's time of 17:78 placed her 15th.

For the boys, senior Luke Barnes leapt to a third place finish in the high jump. His 6-foot, 2-inch jump, a personal best, was just two inches away from first place. The second-place finisher also jumped 6-2 but finished ahead of Luke on the tie-breaker.

The Lady Pirate 3,200-relay team of Lilly Travis, Kaylee Moore, Claudia Dick and Callie Wilson placed fith with a time of 10 minutes, 35.9 seconds.

Lilly, a sophomore, also finished sixth in the 800 run in 2:25.73, and seventh in the 1,600 run, 5:46.80. Freshman Callie Wilson was right behind Lilly in eighth place with a time of 6:01.21.

"The kids went hard all weekend," said High School Track coach Brad Tillman. "Some did exactly like we thought they would, others went above and beyond. I'm proud of all of them."

Beggs won the Class 3A girls team title while Oklahoma Christian School won the boys championship.
