Sperry Junior High Girls Wrestling Makes History
This is the inaugural season of a girls junior high wrestling team at Sperry Schools. The first season for the team resulted in outstanding wins at duals, invitational tournaments, and finally at the State finals. They have made school history not just being the first girls wrestling team, but also by winning the 2026 Oklahoma State Girls 6th and 7th Grade Wrestling Championship at the Junior High Allstate Wrestling Tournament in Oklahoma City.
Sperry had five out of nine girls place on the podium. Sperry Schools' first ever junior high girls wrestling champions are Jolynn Arnold, the 76 lb State Champion, and Presley Williams, the 84 lb State Champion. Our three placers are Raylin Reyes, in the 92 lb category with 3rd place, Natalie LeGrand, a 96 lb wrestler also took 3rd place, and Jolynn Prock, wrestling in the 140 lb category took 4th place.
Other team members include Skyler Klein, Kambrie Woodall, Fayelen Brown, Charlotte Booth, Abigail Jacobsen, Addy Gray, and Scarlett Webb. Each of these girls contributed to the team's success at the state tournament this season.
The Lady Pirates grappled through their season undefeated in duals for a season record of 7-0. They also showed their skills by earning Runners-up in team standings at the Tahlequah Junior High Girls tournament, the Wagoner Junior High Girls Tournament, and the Will Rogers Girls Conference.
The team is led by coaches John Edgar and Cody Williams. Coach Edgar, who took on the challenge of leading this new team of junior high girls, noted, “We are so proud of this team's grit, their drive to succeed, but mostly their love and support of each other. That makes all the difference. In their first year together, they are already working like a seasoned team.” Coach Cody Williams also conveyed his pride in the success of the girls’ hard work. “I believed in these athletes from day one,” he said.
Coach Edgar received a Coach of the Year award at the State Tournament, acknowledging his contribution to develop the players’ skills.
