Lady Pirates Advance to Basketball Area Tournament

It's time for March Madness. While most high school teams in Oklahoma have been eliminated from the playoffs by the time March arrives, the Sperry Lady Pirates are still competing for the coveted Gold Ball, which goes to teams winning state championships.

The Lady Pirates (16-9) will try to move one step closer to that goal on Thursday when they travel to Ada and East Central University where they will play Lone Grove (15-11) in the first round of the Class 3A Area Tournament. Game time is set for 1:30 p.m. Sperry will need to win on Thursday and then again on Friday and Saturday to advance to the Big House, the State Fairgrounds Arena in Oklahoma City, to play in the State Tournament.

The Lady Pirates suffered their first loss of the playoffs last week, losing 58-40 to Class 3A's second-ranked team Bethel. The game was closer than the score indicated, however, as Sperry led several times during the tense game, including early in the fourth quarter.

Sperry, led by head coach Brad Crace, easily defeated Kellyville 55-38 to claim the District Title. The Lady Pirates then defeated 3A No. 13 Holdenville 55-51 to advance to the Regional Finals against Bethel.

Should the Lady Pirates beat Lone Grove they would take on the winner of the Holdenville-Purcell matchup, also set for Thursday in Ada.
