Sperry Band Continues State-Bound Tradition

Sperry Band State Bound in Multiple Categories

The Sperry High School Band of Pirates are no strangers to the state competitions, and this spring they are participating in multiple venues. With marching competitions behind them, they take the stage, literally, to perform concert, ensemble, and solo selections. Not surprisingly, they have performed well in all three categories and will be attending state competitions multiple times this spring.

On Wednesday, March 8, the band traveled to Bartlesville for the OSSAA District Band Competition. The Band of Pirates first competed on stage with prepared pieces for a three judge panel. Then, they moved on to the 2nd portion of competition, sight reading. They had only eight minutes to study a piece of music they had never seen before, and then perform that selection for a single judge. The band earned superior ratings from all four judges. Their rating qualifies the band for state competition. They will compete at OSSAA state in three weeks.

Due to their ratings throughout this academic year, the Sperry Band of Pirates are once again in the running for a Sweepstakes State Championship.

Members of the high school band traveled to Claremore on Saturday, March 4, to compete at the OSSAA District Solo and Ensemble contest. Students who chose to compete in this event prepare individual or small group performances outside of regular class time. This competition requires individual motivation and follow-through to be successful. Sperry had eight individuals compete as solo contestants and six small groups compete as ensembles.

Students who earn the highest score of superior from the judges move on to the state level. Six soloists and five ensembles from Sperry earned superior ratings and will be competing at the state competition in April. Two soloists and one ensemble earned the second-highest rating of excellent. A total of five Sperry High School Band students qualified for state solo and ensemble in multiple categories.

Soloists headed to state are Waydon Ingram, Emery Edgar, Kamya Barrett, Jace Million, Aiyana Million, and Chase Ford. Bently Doshier and Weston Preslar received excellent ratings for their solo performances.

Ensembles headed to state are the Clarinet Trio of Waydon Ingram, Mikayla Martin, and Allysen Dean; the Saxophone Quartet of Emery Edgar, Kamya Barrett, Keyara Fleming, and Allysen Dean; the Brass Quintet of Jace Million, Hannah Enevoldsen, Chris Akers, Lizzy Riggs, and Weston Preslar; the KL mallet duet of Julia Knott and Hailey Lance; and the FM mallet duet of Chase Ford and Steven Martin. Jessica Mathis and Aubrey Sappington received excellent rating for their Flute Duet ensemble.
