Sperry Band of Pirates Continue Their Drive to State Competitions

Sperry Band Qualifies for Another State Competition

Maintaining their tradition of success, the Sperry High School Band brought the third portion of their annual series of competitions to a close on March 6, in Bartlesville, Oklahoma. The fall competitions for marching band ended with straight ones at the Regional Competition, and a record number of students later qualified for the Honor Band. In recent solo and ensemble competitions, the individual skills of band members earned ones and an invitation to the State competition in April. Then, at the March 6 OSSAA District Concert Band competition in Bartlesville, the Band of Pirates continued their sweep through this year’s activities with more Superior ratings.

The concert band competition is broken into two parts. The first portion consisted of each band performing prearranged pieces which they were expected to practice. Sperry High School Band performed “Jubilance,” by James Swearingen and “New Horizons,” by William Owens. The three judges for this portion of the competition awarded the Pirates all ones, the Superior Rating. The second portion is a “sight reading” of a piece the band had not seen before.  Each band is given a piece of music which they have not seen before and have only eight minutes to study the selection before performing it.  On this difficult and stressful portion of the competition, the Sperry Band of Pirates showed their skill and earned ones from all the judges.

The Sperry High School Band now prepares for the state competition, and again find themselves in the running for the Sweepstakes State Championship.
