Martha Battles
Library Media Specialist
Martha Battles is in her 37th year as an educator and her third year at Sperry Public Schools. She earned a Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education from Oklahoma State University and a Master of Education in Library Media from East Central University. Throughout her career, Mrs. Battles has taught kindergarten, first, fourth, fifth, and sixth grades, as well as Native American Education and elementary music. She currently teaches library lessons for Pre-K through fifth grade and fourth- and fifth-grade computer skills. Her educational career has taken her to schools in Kiefer, Idabel, Broken Bow, and Foreman, Arkansas, before joining Sperry.
One of Mrs. Battles' greatest joys is making connections with students. In the library, she especially loves seeing students discover a book they truly enjoy and watching those special “lightbulb” moments when students realize they understand something. Her goal is for the library to be a place students remember as adults with feelings of warmth and joy. She hopes their experiences will inspire them to make libraries a special part of their own children's and grandchildren's lives.
Mrs. Battles hopes students leave the library with a desire to read and a commitment to treating others with respect and dignity. She enjoys incorporating crafts and puppets into library lessons whenever possible to make learning engaging and memorable.
Outside of school, Mrs. Battles enjoys searching for vintage treasures at estate sales, flea markets, thrift stores, and antique stores. She appreciates Sperry's small-town atmosphere because she also grew up in a small town. One of her most treasured recent experiences was traveling to Europe for the first time during the summer of 2026, visiting Italy and France as a special 60th-birthday gift from her son.
After nearly 40 years in education, Mrs. Battles has a special message for families: supporting children as they learn to read is one of the most important things families can do. She encourages parents to read to their children, read with them, play reading games, let children see family members reading, and support the work of their children's teachers. As Victor Hugo said, “To learn to read is to light a fire.”
