Sperry Elementary Celebrates Skills of Local Future Chefs

Young Chefs Shine in Sodexo’s Future Chefs Competition

Students recently stepped into the spotlight in Sodexo’s annual Future Chefs Competition, an event designed to inspire young cooks while teaching the importance of preparing healthy meals. The program gives students the opportunity to showcase their culinary creativity while learning valuable skills that can benefit them for a lifetime.

Future Chefs participants not only learn how to prepare healthy meals, but they also gain a healthy serving of confidence in themselves. Combined, those two factors can have a profound effect on their physical and emotional well-being today and throughout their lives. This is especially important as many school-age children continue to face challenges related to obesity and maintaining healthy lifestyles. By encouraging students to explore nutritious cooking, the program helps build lifelong habits centered around wellness.

This year’s competition featured three talented fifth-grade contestants who impressed judges with their creativity and flavors:

  • Heaven Teeter prepared Carne con Papas, a flavorful and hearty dish.
  • Guinevere Mollenhauer created Lemon Flavored Chin Chin, bringing a bright and unique twist to the competition.
  • Brynna Bryant presented Brynna’s Burritos, a dish packed with bold ingredients and personality.

Throughout the event, each student was paired with a sous chef from the school cafeteria, who assisted them as they prepared their dishes and helped guide them through the cooking process. The partnership allowed students to learn directly from food service professionals while building confidence in the kitchen.

The students shared their excitement about participating in the competition. Brynna Bryant said, “It was so much fun! Everyone was really nice and I can’t wait to try a new recipe next year!” Guinevere Mollenhauer added, “I loved the Future Chefs Competition. It was really cool to get to be a part of a real competition.”

After careful consideration, the judges named Heaven Teeter as this year’s Future Chefs Competition winner for her delicious Carne con Papas. Winner Heaven Teeter shared her enthusiasm as well, saying, “The Chefs Competition was GREAT! I made a really delicious dish. It was also really neat to work with a real chef.”

The Sodexo Future Chefs Competition continues to be a highlight for students, celebrating culinary talent while promoting healthy eating habits and self-confidence. Events like this not only showcase students’ skills but also empower them to develop a lifelong appreciation for cooking, nutrition, and creativity in the kitchen.
